A few different things conspired to make me take a look at BSD. I had been curious about it for a while, since I started using Linux and the other Unices that I have used in the past. There are three main events that I can pinpoint and these are:
- Apple choosing to base MacOS X on BSD
- Alaric Snell's kind offer to host this site on one of his Warhead boxes that runs NetBSD
- Working at About.com where I had to take care of a herd of FreeBSD servers.
I currently have two BSD boxen on my home network. These are fire-skink, which runs OpenBSD 3.2 and acts as a firewall, and gecko, which is Vicki's iMac and runs MacOS X 10.3 (Panther). I will be adding another iMac running Panther to the network as soon as I can get Cat-5 installed in Patrick's room. It will need a name before that happens.
